Job Description

The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes  in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to fill the following position:

Laboratory Technologist (01 Position)

Contract Duration: 8 months, renewable based on availability of funds

Job Purpose:
To conduct laboratory assays and experiments, make detailed observations and analyze complex data in a timely manner.

Roles & Responsibilities

  •   Assist scientists in the design, optimization and validation of flow cytometry panels.
  • Process, stain and acquire stained samples through the flow cytometer following standard operating procedures.
  • Analyse data from mass and fluorescence flow cytometers using FlowJo, GraphPad Prism, R, Bioconductor and other dimensional reduction algorithms including tSNE, FlowSOM, SPADE, UMAP.
  • Analysis of single cell RNA sequences, pathogen sequences, metabolome data etc.
  • Receiving, processing and storing study samples according to SOPs so as to maximise their quality in subsequent testing.
  • Monitoring study sample storage conditions including temperature.
  • Implementing GCLP practices: Cleaning and disinfecting equipment; Tracking equipment servicing requirements; Monitoring temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels; Data backup; Running equipment performance QCs.
  • Ensuring that required reagents and supplies are in sufficient stocks and are kept securely in recommended conditions.
  •  Performing IATA compliant shipment of samples to and from partner laboratories.
  • Ensuring health and safety as per SOPs by conducting safety induction of new staff/students, refilling first aid boxes, administering first aid, updating materials data safety sheets.
  • Performing scientific duties by assisting in: setting up and cleaning of databases, writing reports regarding assays and experiments; using computers to perform mathematical calculations and for the preparation of graphs; presentation of findings at local, national and international workshops/conferences.
  • Writing and reviewing of operational and study specific SOPs.
  •  Any other assignments.

Person Specification

  • Bachelor of Science degree with a major in any Biological Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology or related field from a recognized University.
  • Possession of a master’s degree in a relevant Biological Sciences, data science, bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or mathematics is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of R programming language is also an added advantage.
  • At least one year of experience working in a research setting as a laboratory technologist or data scientist.
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot with minimal supervision.
  • Should have an understanding of GCP/HSP and GCLP guidelines for human research.
  • Willingness to conclude the scheduled experiments out of hours in cases when unavoidable circumstances arise.
  • Should have an up to date practicing license.
  • Should have good communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable in use of Microsoft Office packages.
